Ayrshire Cows

Meet our "herd" of two milking cows.  They provide our family with milk, 4-H projects, and half-ton pets.

Lane's End Hillary

We obtained Hillary in the fall of 1998 from a farm near Ovid, Michigan.  Hillary was the last Ayrshire of a retired farmer who made his first Ayrshire sale to pay for his soon-to-be wife's wedding ringsso she's from a very old cow family.  She is naturally polled (not able to grow horns) and was exceptionally good at turning pasture into impressive amounts of milk.  Hillary lived to a ripe old age of 16 years old.

Dandy's New Little Lane

Lane is Hillary's only purebred heifer calf (and her last calf--at 14 years old).  Lane is also naturally polled and carries on her mother's old-fashioned Ayrshire type and great ability to process pasture.  Lane freshened (had her calf and started milking) on May 8, 2009.  With only one milk test performed her milk is running 3.7 % protein & 5.8 % fat.  Her scc score is five, but she was only at 18 days in milk.

Marbrae Belleval

We obtained Belle at the 2008 Ohio Ayrshire Sale.  She is from a well known Canadian herd and is a much more modern type.  She's not as good at making milk on pasture, but you throw in a good TMR and she does very nicely.  Belle last freshened on April 6, 2009.  Her milk is running 3.3 % protein & 5.8 % fat.  Her scc score is zero.

Dandy's Memory Lane Bud

Emily (ML-y) at the 2010 Ingham County Fair with Belle looking over her shoulder.   Emily was born on 5/8/9 out of Lane by our own bull, Hawksfield Brad.  She is genetically polled.  We don't have room to milk more cows--someday she'll have to move on to new homes.
